Dehumidifiers work by sucking damp air across coils which freeze the moisture from it, the dry slightly warmed air is then recirculated around the room. The extracted moisture drains into a sealed container and is thus removed from the air/room.
They therefore need to be shut in a room/building whilst running. As such it can be a slow process, but allows drying with minimal amount of shrinkage.
